Despite his self-characterization as a simple shepherd and farmer, Amos is one of the first “literary” prophets in ancient Israel. He is a poet of particular power, often warning Israel about impending doom but also holding out some possible hope for the future. We will closely read (in translation) some of the prophet’s more memorable passages, focusing on his imagery and the rhetorical force of his language.
